Fuller officials say the sound and light focus in the new worship center reflect broader trends in American worship that emphasize performance and varied expressions of faith.

In the chapel, panels on the walls and ceiling may be moved to enhance the sound of a string orchestra, while a sophisticated sound system will be able to accommodate hip-hop performers with their bass-heavy take on the Gospel.

The design also will allow for PowerPoint presentations. Movies and videos could be shown on two LCD screens. The worship center will also have rooms for composing, recording and editing performances.

"Many people who come to church browse YouTube for two hours in the morning," said Richard Mouw, the seminary's president. "How can we preach the Gospel to people who are getting their news, getting their entertainment, in totally new ways from the 20th century?"

Rosalynn Carter ordained a deacon at Maranatha Baptist Church

PLAINS, Ga. (AP) _ Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter was ordained a deacon last month by Maranatha Baptist Church, the independent Associated Baptist Press reported.

Rosalynn Carter, 79, has been active in the congregation, along with ex-President Jimmy Carter, who draws thousands of visitors to the rural church by teaching Sunday school there.

Maranatha leaders did not respond to a phone message and an e-mail from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The former president is a longtime Baptist deacon _ the title Protestants give a layperson who helps the minister serve the community.
