The subway car that derailed inside of a Metrorail tunnel Sunday has been removed from the downtown section of track where the incident occurred.
A spokesman for the transit agency said the damaged car was removed from the tracks not far from the Washington Convention Center's underground platform around 4:10 a.m. Steve Taubenkibel said the car was towed to the Metrorail rail yard just beyond the Greenline's Branch Avenue station.
Meanwhile, Metro is still working with federal investigators to determine the cause of the derailment that injured about 20 people. The six-car train was one of the 5000-series cars delivered since 2001. The cars have been involved in more than half the derailments in the system since 2001. They account for about 20 percent of Metro's fleet.
