Three of Metro's five lines will run on different routes tonight through Tuesday morning so the Arlington Cemetery Station can be closed for maintenance.

The station will be closed from 8 tonight to 5 a.m. Tuesday to replace one of the oldest track switches in the system. The station will be served by shuttle buses that will travel between the Rosslyn and Pentagon stations every five minutes from the opening of service until 7 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday and Monday, Metro officials said.

The Blue Line will be rerouted over the Potomac River on Yellow Line tracks. It will run between Franconia-Springfield and Mount Vernon Square.

Orange Line service will be expanded to serve stations normally handled by Blue Line trains. It will run from Vienna to both New Carrollton and Largo Town Center.

The Yellow Line will run from Huntington to Greenbelt.

The Red and Green lines will operate on their normal routes.

Subway officials said the changes are being made to minimize service disruptions. "We were able to connect all of the system from station to station, so customers can complete rail trips without getting on a bus," said Jim Hughes, Metro's chief operating officer for operations support.

"Because of where we have to do the work, we had to put in a different pattern," Hughes said. "It looks a lot more confusing than it is."

He said crews will place a map of the temporary system changes on trains and in stations. Those maps will be removed before regular service resumes Tuesday.

How many maps?

"A lot," Hughes said.
