"Dreamgirls," "Babel" win top Golden Globes

BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) - The searing cultural drama "Babel" and the uplifting musical "Dreamgirls" won the top Golden Globe awards on Monday, making them instant front-runners in Hollywood's Oscar race. "Dreamgirls," which follows the rise of three women singers and closely resembles the ascendancy of all-girl groups like The Supremes, won three awards. The "Dreamgirls" bounty was more than any other film and it included the trophies for best musical or comedy, as well as best supporting actor and actress for Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson, respectively.

Golden Globe fashion shimmers while stars shiver

BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) - Stars sparkled and shivered on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards on Monday but the chilly weather did not ruin a chance to show off dazzling gowns in gold, silver, blue and white. ABC's "Lost" maps out an ending

PASADENA (Hollywood Reporter) - The producers of "Lost" are looking to set a precise end-date for ABC's Emmy-winning thriller, which some critics say has lost its way this season. A time line would help the show's creative team plot out the final story arcs of the marooned plane-crash survivors, executive producer Carlton Cuse told reporters Sunday.

"Apocalypto" critics should do homework:: Gibson

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Actor and producer Mel Gibson hit back on Monday at accusations his "Apocalypto" movie misrepresents Mayan Indians as savages, accusing opponents of not doing their research. "Those who criticize the movie should do their homework. I did," Gibson told reporters at a screening of the film in Mexico City.

"24" premiere hit by Patriots missile

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Jack Bauer tangled with both the Chinese government and the AFC divisional championships Sunday, as the two-hour season premiere of "24" lost ground against the tail end of the Chargers-Patriots game but recovered to challenge ABC's "Desperate Housewives." It was a big night for broadcast TV, which saw "Desperate Housewives" drop to its lowest viewership for an original episode in the face of both Fox's "24" and an interview with President Bush on CBS' "60 Minutes."

Bravo shuts "Queer Eye," gets real with Abdul

PASADENA (Hollywood Reporter) - Bravo will end the run of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" after the makeover show's upcoming fifth season this summer. The cable network said it would wrap the series with a special final episode after paying tribute to the "Fab Five" throughout the 10-episode season.

Sci Fi, Clooney crazy for "Diamond"

PASADENA (Hollywood Reporter) - Sci Fi Channel has teamed with George Clooney to develop a miniseries set in a futuristic civilization. "Diamond Age" is based on Neal Stephenson's book "The Diamond Age: Or a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer," which the author will adapt for the six-hour TV version.

ABC orders legal, cop pilots

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - ABC has handed out pilot orders to two dramas, "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Judy's Got a Gun." "Dirty," described as "Six Feet Under" meets "Dynasty," centers on an idealistic lawyer who inherits the job of tending to the legal (and sometimes illegal) needs of one of the wealthiest, most colorful families in New York. It is also known as "The Darlings."

Top Bollywood stars get engaged

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Two of India's biggest cinema stars, Abhishek Bachchan and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, are finally engaged after months of feverish speculation about their relationship, their families said on Monday. The hush-hush romance of Rai and Bachchan, the son of legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, had transfixed the Mumbai-based Hindi film industry, despite denials by the couple of sharing anything more than a healthy friendship.

"Idol" runner-up McPhee rushes to make album

NEW YORK (Billboard) - When 2006 "American Idol" runner-up Katharine McPhee rushed off the road and into the studio last fall to begin working on her debut album, she quickly realized the art of the compromise. Indeed, while some tracks for the self-titled set, due January 30 via RCA, were fully-formed demos from veteran songwriters, others were crafted with McPhee's input from the ground up by Timbaland sideman Nate "Danja" Hills, Babyface and Kara DioGuardi.
