Our last Whiz Kids contest asked you to invent new words, either by renaming real things or by coming up with a term for something that should have its own word but somehow doesn't. Our winner was Halle Ostoyich, 8, of Bethesda, Md., who coined a word for the fit that kids pitch when they get home and have to start doing their homework: a fimp. Here are some more of our favorite entries.
Pelmurfibias (for pants - a combination of the four bones that your pants cover, the pelvis, the femur, the fibula and the tibia)
- Andrew Fleckenstein, 10, Arlington, Va.
Meressi (to miss recess, a mixed up version of "miss" and "recess")
- Aliana Gungor, 9, Arlington, Va.
Booktionary (a dictionary is a book where you find words; add "book" to it, and you've got a place where you find books)
- Jeffrey Kruger, 10, Arlington, Va.
Skiaman (what happens when professional skiers get so into skiing they practice too much)
- Bailey Kowalski, 10, Arlington, Va.
Saturunday (Saturday and Sunday together; if you put the accent on the third syllable, it's fun to say and more descriptive)
- Lisa Bolvin, 9, Laurel, Md.
Kofits (feet)
