NEW YORK (Reuters) - Colorado Avalanche forward Joe Sakic and Brendan Shanahan of the New York Rangers were named captains on Thursday for the NHL All-Star game.
Sakic, who was voted the 2004 All-Star Most Valuable Player, will be making his 12th appearance in the game when he leads the Western Conference team onto the ice in Dallas next Wednesday.
Shanahan, who will captain the Eastern Conference, will be skating in his eighth All-Star contest.
"I think for me, any time you get a chance to go to an All-Star game, first of all it's just an honor," said Sakic on the Avalanche Web site. "It means people think you're still playing well and that's a big thing."
Sakic sits fifth on the all-time All-Star scoring list with 18 points (six goals, 12 assists).
Wayne Gretzky tops the list with 25 points followed by Mario Lemieux (23), Mark Messier (20) and Gordie Howe (19).
