A short, eclectic list of my favorite sources of information about Buddhism and meditation:
· "What the Buddha Taught," by Walpola Rahula (Grove Press, 1959). An essential primer.
· "Buddhism With An Attitude," by B. Alan Wallace (Snow Lion Publications, 2001). This is a more modern interpretation of the tenets of Buddhism and how to apply them in daily life, by a former monk and interpreter for the Dalai Lama. I've found Wallace to be one of the best explainers of Buddhist techniques.
· "The Attention Revolution: Unlocking the Power of the Focused Mind," by B. Alan Wallace (Wisdom Publications, 2006). This book focuses on Buddhist techniques to sharpen attention.
· "Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill," by Matthieu Ricard (Little, Brown, 2005). A heartfelt guide by a former cellular geneticist and the Dalai Lama, who himself has been a leading subject of neuroscientists' investigations.
