Other gay-friendly bed-and-breakfasts in Virginia include:

Gay Street Inn (160 Gay St., Washington, Va., 540-675-3288, http://www.gaystreetinn.com/) This gay-owned restored 1860s farmhouse, a 90-minute drive from the District, is an excellent base for a dining getaway. Several acclaimed restaurants, including the Inn at Little Washington, are nearby. Doubles range from $145 to $215 a night.

The Inn at Meander Plantation (2333 N. James Madison Hwy., Locust Dale, 800-385-4936, http://www.meander.net/) This nine-room 18th-century Georgian revival inn, surrounded by bucolic grounds, is a 90-minute drive from the District and 20 to 30 minutes from some of Virginia's best wineries. The three-course breakfast included in the room rate ($165 to $265) is one of many pluses.

Walker House (3280 S. Crater Rd., Petersburg, 804-861-5822, http://www.walker-house.com/) This gay-owned, four-room bed-and-breakfast, in a 19th-century mansion, is 2 1/2 hours from the District. It's a suitable base for exploring the burgeoning local arts scene. Doubles, including private baths and a full breakfast, range from $98 to $120 a night.

Lavender Sea B&B (507 Capitol Landing Rd., Williamsburg, 757-345-0198, http://www.lavenderseabanb.com/) This lesbian-owned, art-filled home has just one suite. The mermaid-

themed furnishings include a queen-size bed, a refrigerator and an eating area. Many of the city's Colonial attractions are within walking distance. The unbeatable rate, $75 a night, includes a continental breakfast.

Cape Charles House B&B (645 Tazewell Ave., Cape Charles, 757-331-4920, http://www.capecharleshouse.com/) This spacious, antique-filled, five-room Colonial-style mansion, part of a gay-friendly Eastern Shore community, is a pleasant five-minute walk from the Chesapeake Bay. Doubles, including a gourmet breakfast, range from $120 to $200 a night.

1848 Island Manor House (4160 Main St., Chincoteague Island, 800-852-1505, http://www.islandmanor.com/) This eight-bedroom, gay-owned abode blends well with Virginia's coastal charm. Assateague National Seashore is within walking distance. Double room rates, including a hearty breakfast, range from $110 to $205 a night.
