U.S. Military Deaths in Iraq Hit 3,079

-- As of Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at least 3,079 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians. At least 2,464 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

The AP count is 16 higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Friday at 10 a.m. EST.

The British military has reported 130 deaths; Italy, 33; Ukraine, 18; Poland, 18; Bulgaria, 13; Spain, 11; Denmark, six; El Salvador, five; Slovakia, four; Latvia, three; Estonia, Netherlands, Thailand, two each; and Australia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Romania, one death each.

The count includes two deaths listed by the Department of Defense that could not be verified by the AP as Iraq-related casualties.

_ Three soldiers were killed Saturday north of Baghdad.

_ Two soldiers were killed Friday in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad.

_ Two soldiers were killed Thursday in east Baghdad.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

_ Army Pfc. Nathan P. Fairlie, 21, Candor, N.Y.; killed Friday in Baqubah when his vehicle struck an explosive; assigned to the 6th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
