The amount of time it takes to receive your refund depends on how you file. Generally, the refund check should arrive in your mailbox within six weeks if a paper return was filed. E-files can expect a refund within three weeks. The earlier a taxpayer files, the sooner the refund may be available. For more information on how long your refund should take, see Topic 152.
To track the status of your check online, the IRS now provides a tool accessible from its home page. Tracking is available four weeks after you file if you use e-file or six weeks if using a paper return. Be prepared to have your social security number, filing status and the exact amount of your refund ready.
Questions about your refund will also be fielded at 800-829-1954 or 800-829-4477. Please allow four weeks after you mail your return before calling, and be prepared to have your social security number, filing status and exact amount of your refund available.
Take a look at Tax Topic 303, "Checklist of Common Errors When Preparing Your Tax Return," to make sure you filed correctly.
If there is a problem processing your return and you have recently moved, you can change your address by filing Form 8822 (pdf). More information on changing your address is available in Tax Topic 157.
