Christopher William Hunnicutt, 32, a dedicated rock climber who sold recreational outdoor equipment for a living, died in an ice-climbing accident Jan. 30 in Provo Canyon, Utah. For the past nine months, he lived in Salt Lake City.
Mr. Hunnicutt was born in Washington, grew up in Falls Church and graduated from H.B. Woodlawn High School in Arlington. He became interested in rock climbing while attending an Outward Bound program in high school. He worked for Recreational Equipment Inc. in Falls Church when he was in high school and during college vacations.
He attended Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., and graduated in 2000 from the University of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in media arts. He lived in Tucson, where he worked at the Summit Hut, an outdoor recreational equipment store, until moving to Utah last year.
In Salt Lake City, Mr. Hunnicutt worked as a regional sales representative for Black Diamond Equipment Ltd. He was an experienced rock climber and back-country skier who participated in outdoor activities throughout the West.
Survivors include his parents, Robert and June Hunnicutt of McLean; and a brother, Paul Hunnicutt of Boulder, Colo.
