Right tackle Jon Jansen signed a five-year, $23 million contract extension with the Washington Redskins yesterday that will keep the team's longest-tenured player in uniform through the 2011 season.

The deal includes a $10 million signing bonus. Jansen earned $4 million this past season, his eighth with the Redskins.

"One of the things I had expressed to both [Redskins Coach] Joe Gibbs and [owner Daniel] Snyder is that I've been here eight years -- longer than anybody else -- and I wanted to know I was going to be able to finish my career here," Jansen said. "I had two years left on my original deal . . . and I wanted to express to them that I wanted to play my whole career here, and they stepped up and allowed me to do that. I really appreciate that."

Jansen, 31, started in 15 games despite numerous injuries, including a sore calf that limited his mobility and ability to practice for most of the season.

Last offseason, when the team sought to clear cap space for free agents, members of the front office flew to Jansen's Michigan home to ask him to restructure as a gesture of good faith. His previous deal ran through the 2008 season.

The Redskins also have discussed restructuring with cornerback Shawn Springs. Right guard Randy Thomas, quarterback Mark Brunell and left end Phillip Daniels restructured late this past season to allow the Redskins to re-sign running back Ladell Betts. Brunell, who is slated to earn $5.2 million, is a candidate to restructure again.
