During our weekly online chat (most Mondays at 2 p.m.), you ask and we answer your travel questions -- mostly. Here's one we couldn't get to last week.

Travel to India: I will be in India for Diwali. Will sites such as the Taj Mahal be closed? Is there a Web site I can go to for information?

Diwali, which commemorates the return of Lord Rama from the forest, is one of the most important Hindu festivals in India. The holiday falls in late October/early November and typically lasts three days, though some cities or regions might stretch it longer. Each day has a special significance and set of rituals: For example, on the first day, buy utensils, jewelry or other objects of worth. The big event occurs on the third day (this year, Nov. 9), when locals swap gifts and sweets, light candles and set off firecrackers. During Diwali, sightseeing attractions are open and stores keep late hours. Taj Mahal closes on Friday, per its regular schedule.
