GETTING THERE: To get to the two burgs -- Emmits and Gettys -- go north on Interstate 270 through Frederick, where it becomes Route 15 north. Keep on going. Emmitsburg is about 25 miles north of Frederick; Gettysburg is 15 miles farther up the road, with the Mason-Dixon Line running right between them. Both towns are west of Route 15.

EATING THERE: At Chubby's Southern Style Barbeque (16430 Old Frederick Rd., Emmitsburg, 301-447-3322), we got a heaping helping of barbecue chicken, coleslaw, baked beans and iced tea for $13. North meets South at the Avenue Restaurant (21 Steinwehr Ave., Gettysburg, 717-334-3235), where meat and two sides run $11, a bowl of grits or scrapple is $2.99 and delectable crab soup, $4.95.
