Representatives from the various bodies associated with the City Title games will have a conference call this afternoon to discuss a plan to hold the games at Verizon Center on March 5.
Washington Sports & Entertainment Chairman Abe Pollin and D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D) will speak with representatives from the D.C. Interscholastic Athletic Association, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission to negotiate a deal that is not cost-prohibitive for the two scholastic bodies, according to Dawn Slonneger, chief of staff to Gray.
The games annually match the champions of the DCIAA against the WCAC in a boys-girls doubleheader.
Slonneger said the parties will discuss a cost estimate, factoring in expected attendance. The game was last held at the facility in 2002, when it drew just shy of 5,000 spectators. Three of the past four years it has been played at George Washington University's Smith Center; in 2005, it was held at Coolidge High.
According to a source familiar with the negotiations, who asked not to be identified because of the ongoing discussions, WSE has offered use of the arena at no cost, but will retain the gate receipts and require the DCIAA and WCAC to cover all operating expenses, including arena staff and security.
