A Marine was killed today in Iraq, the U.S. military announced.

The Marine died while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, an insurgent stronghold west of Baghdad. The military offered no details about the attack.

The Marine was assigned to the Multi-National Force-West unit, according to a statement from Camp Fallujah in Iraq. The name of the Marine was withheld by the military pending notification of next of kin.

President Bush plans to send an additional 21,500 troops to Baghdad and volatile Anbar in an attempt to secure the country.

More than 3,100 U.S. military personnel have died in Iraq since the start of the war in March 2003.
