Watchdogs on Alert

Congress is in full oversight mode this week.

This morning, a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee will hold a field hearing at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on the treatment of wounded soldiers there, with testimony by the Army's surgeon general, Lt. Gen. Kevin C. Kiley and Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman, the former Walter Reed commander, among others. The House Appropriations defense subcommittee has scheduled a hearing on the same subject for this afternoon, and the Senate Armed Services Committee plans to hold a Walter Reed hearing tomorrow.

Meanwhile, four U.S. attorneys have been subpoenaed to appear before a House Judiciary subcommittee this week as it considers the Justice Department's firing of eight attorneys.

IN THE BALANCE: With eight days of jury deliberations over, the capital awaits the resolution of one of its biggest criminal cases in years, the perjury trial of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff.

SUMMIT DIPLOMACY: North Korean and U.S. officials will meet in New York to build on a recent deal to stop Pyongyang's nuclear program, and Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte is in Southeast Asia for discussions with China, Japan and South Korea. This weekend in Baghdad, a regional summit on Iraqi security is to begin. The summit, which the Bush administration originally resisted, will include the United States, Iran and Syria.

AN EARLY SPRING BREAK: Bush leaves Thursday for a week-long trip to Central and South America, visiting Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.

A WOMAN'S TOUCH: Emily's List -- the powerful political action committee that supports female candidates -- is in pretty good shape this year with a female presidential front-runner, a female House speaker and a large number of women elected to Congress. Tomorrow, it will celebrate that success with a luncheon in the District. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) are expected to attend.
