Keith Simmons scored a twisting layup in the lane with 4.8 seconds remaining to lift Holy Cross to a 55-53 win over American University in the Patriot League tournament semifinals yesterday in Worcester, Mass.
Tim Clifford had 19 points and eight rebounds, and Torey Thomas added 16 points and nine rebounds for Holy Cross (24-8).
Andre Ingram scored 20 points and four rebounds for American (16-14), which has lost seven straight to the Crusaders.
Simmons, the Patriot League's most valuable player and its leading scorer, finished the game with 11 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. He teamed with Thomas and Clifford to rally the Crusaders when they trailed 31-23 early in the second half.
There were three ties and two lead changes in the first half.
Top-seeded Holy Cross will host the league championship game Friday afternoon against the Bucknell.
ยท BUCKNELL 68, ARMY 47: In Lewisburg, Pa., Chris McNaughton scored 23 points, and Donald Brown added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Bison (22-8), who are seeking their third straight trip to the NCAA tournament when they face Holy Cross. Their trademark tough defense frustrated the Black Knights during a 14-0 second-half run.
By the time Jarrell Brown sank a baseline jumper with 8 minutes 25 seconds left to end the horrid stretch, it was way too late for Army (15-16), with Bucknell leading 57-40.
Brown led Army with 17 points, while Matt Bell added 13.
Seniors McNaughton and Brown have been key players on the Bison's last two trips to the NCAAs, and they came up big again in their last game at Sojka Pavilion.
McNaughton finished 10-of-13 shooting and also grabbed six rebounds. Brown was 5 of 7 from the field, 5 of 6 from the foul line.
