He was head usher at St. Louis Catholic Church in Clarksville and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Ellicott City. He also was a charter member of the National World War II Memorial and a member of the 1st Marine Division Association, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Laurel Senior Friendship Club.

His wife of 55 years, Eleanor Mary Carroll, died in 1999.

Survivors include four children, Cecilia F. Tucker of Highland, Ellen Peele of Hedgesville, W.V., Daniel Carroll Jr. of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Anne Lane of Elkton, Md.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William Kenneth Baker, 97, a retired ordnance engineer at the Navy Department, died Feb. 22 of congestive heart failure at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.

Mr. Baker joined the Navy Department's Bureau of Weapons in Washington in 1935. In 1956, he was promoted to physical science administrator responsible for the planning and support of aeroballistic research.

He made significant contributions during his career, receiving a Meritorious Civilian Service Award in 1946 and a Sustained Superior Performance award in 1960. He retired in 1971.

A longtime resident of Bethesda and later Gaithersburg, he lived in the Washington area for 73 years.

Along with his first wife, Helen Dudley Baker, he helped popularize square dancing in the Washington area during the late 1940s and 1950s. She died in 1966.

He met his second wife through square dancing.

Mr. Baker was born near Lake Oswego, Ore., where his family lived on a small farm and produced a variety of fruits, vegetables and dairy products that they took to market in Portland.

He graduated with honors from Oregon State University in 1931 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Tau engineering societies and, later, an association of naval weapons engineers and scientists. He is listed in the American Men of Science, 10th edition, published in 1960.

His second wife, Edna Thomas Baker, whom he married in 1971, died in 2001. A stepson, Robert S. Thomas, died last year.

Survivors include a son from his first marriage, Dudley R. Baker of Huntsville, Ala.; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Travers of Alpharetta, Ga.; four grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
