Powell had been disappointed that he was not playing college football. But he remained committed to his dream; Bowie recalled that when he last saw Powell working out on Central's football field.

"I talked to him about going to another school where he could play or maybe concentrating on track, but football was his first love," Bowie said.

Glasby said Powell and his friends had gone to see a movie at a theater in Georgetown and were on their way home when they were attacked.

"The two friends who were with him were pretty distraught and shaken up," he said.

Glasby, pastor of Remnant Community Church in Alexandria, was looking forward to seeing his nephew yesterday morning. Powell's parents, Vermelle and Maurice Powell Sr., belong to the church, and Powell had accompanied them the previous Sunday. "It was his first time here. He sat in the second row," Glasby said.

Powell, who had two sisters, was so moved that "he talked to his father and had planned to join this Sunday," Glasby said.

Staff researcher Rena Kirsch contributed to this report.
