A man was fatally struck by a six-car train at the Columbia Heights Metrorail station at 1:41 p.m. today, Metro officials said.

According to initial eyewitness reports, the 57-year-old man jumped onto the tracks and into the path of the inbound Yellow Line train headed toward Huntington. His name was not released, but officials said he was a District resident.

Green and Yellow line trains shared one track around the scene while police and emergency personnel investigated the incident. Trains were single-tracked between the Georgia Ave-Petworth and U St./African-American Civil War Memorial/Cardozo Metrorail stations. Metro also used shuttle buses to take passengers from Georgia Ave-Petworth to Columbia Heights and to U Street.

Normal service resumed shortly before 4 p.m., a Metro spokesman said.
