Alcohol a Factor in Crash That Killed 2 Men

Alcohol played a part in a March 5 collision that killed two Ellicott City men, according to autopsy results released yesterday by Howard County police.

Test results confirmed that Christopher McCullough, 21, one of the drivers who died, had been drinking before the crash. The autopsy showed that McCullough's blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit, police said.

The other driver who was killed, Allan Leffler, 66, a well-known pediatrician, had not been drinking, according to tests.

The collision occurred about 10:30 p.m. on Route 103 in Ellicott City after McCullough's Ford Taurus crossed the double yellow line and struck Leffler's Volkswagen Passat. Both drivers were killed on impact, police said. Leffler's wife, Melissa, who was riding with him, was hospitalized but has been released.

Statement in Fatal Carjacking Is Admissible

A federal judge in Baltimore has ruled that a suspect's incriminating statement to police in a 2002 fatal carjacking in the Annapolis historic district can be admitted as evidence in his upcoming trial.

Monday's ruling in U.S. District Court was the latest episode in the long legal wrangling over a statement that Leeander J. Blake, 21, gave to police after the slaying of Annapolis businessman Straughan Lee Griffin, 51.

An Anne Arundel County Circuit Court judge ruled the statement inadmissible, a decision ultimately upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
