Miller said he also wants the driving range to be lighted so it could stay open after dark. He said the authority had not decided when the driving range would close, but noted that other ranges stay open until 10 or 11 p.m.

"I don't anticipate anything longer than that," he said. Miller added that the lights would be designed to minimize disturbance to neighbors.

Under the plan, the other big site change would be the addition of miniature golf: Miller said the Revenue Authority intends to put in one 18-hole course and may add a second later. He described the design of the course as "peaceful" -- "no windmills or clowns or things of that sort," he said.

He said no fees have been proposed for the driving range and mini-golf but that greens fees at the nine-hole course would not change.

Miller met with some area residents to talk about the plan in late February. He said this week that the details of the Sligo Creek overhaul were not final.

"This is a concept of what could happen," Miller said. "The Revenue Authority is looking to work with the local community to finalize the plan."

Neighbors have said they are concerned that the changes at the golf course will increase traffic from cars and pedestrians on winding Sligo Creek Parkway. They worry that the course will be too loud, and that its lights will be too bright and remain on too late.

"Currently, it's nice and dark" on the streets neighboring the course, said Lou Welanetz, president of the North Hills of Sligo Creek Civic Association. "And this will completely change that."

Welanetz said that he felt the Revenue Authority had not considered a less drastic overhaul. If the problem is the run-down golf course, he said, why not start by fixing the course?

"Why not just upgrade the course, and you'll attract golfers back in?" Welanetz said.
