District firefighters believe construction debris may have prompted breathing problems for three of the city's trash collectors.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. as a D.C. Department of Public Works crew was collecting recycling bins on Bancroft Place in Northwest. One of the workers began getting sick after dumping a load into the recycling truck, and two other workers who were nearby had similar symptoms.
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department spokesman Alan Etter said investigators believe a powdery compound in the bottom of one of the recycling containers sparked the symptoms. The men were decontaminated at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
A fire department hazardous materials team has now left the scene.
