· U.S. Marine Corps Maj. William Chesarek was awarded Britain's Distinguished Flying Cross this week for rescuing a wounded British soldier in Iraq. Chesarek, a helicopter pilot, is thought to be the first American so honored since World War II.

· An 81-year-old man ran down a suspected shoplifter with his bike in the Netherlands, a country with more bicycles than people. The alleged thief, 29, had $162 worth of cosmetics on him, police said.

· The national rowing team of Belarus mistakenly rowed into Ukrainian waters during practice this week and was arrested by border guards for entering the country illegally. The team was practicing in unfamiliar waters because its own reservoirs are covered with ice.
