SuperSonics all-star G Ray Allen will miss the rest of the regular season after deciding to undergo surgery for bone spurs in his left ankle.

"It makes sense for Ray to go forward and have the surgery," Sonics GM Rick Sund said yesterday. "He's been playing with pain for some time now, and all parties involved agree that this is what is best for Ray in the long run."

Allen missed the last two games as the pain and discomfort in the ankle increased, and went to Los Angeles on Friday to meet with physician Richard Ferkel, a noted specialist on ankle injuries. Allen has been bothered by the bone spurs since early February, but didn't reveal until March 1 that the ankle was a problem.

Allen, who missed nine games in December with a bone bruise in his right foot, averaged a career-high 26.4 points in 55 games this season. He scored a career-high 54 points on Jan. 12 against the Jazz and scored 30 or more points 18 times.

? WALLACE MISSES GAME: Pistons F Rasheed Wallace received an automatic NBA suspension for Detroit's game at Milwaukee yesterday, two days after being called for his 18th technical foul of the season. Wallace received a technical for arguing a call during the second quarter of a 90-89 loss to the Spurs on Friday night.

? KINGS' MARTIN HURT: Sacramento G Kevin Martin injured his eye early in the second quarter of the Kings' win over the visiting Suns and did not return.

Martin, the team's leading scorer at 20.8 points per game, drove the lane while being defended by James Jones, and came away holding his hand to his eye in obvious pain. He had double vision, the team said, and was scheduled to see an eye specialist today.
