Matthew Centrowitz, Broadneck, Sr.
Over the winter, Centrowitz, left, ran the fastest mile in the country (4 minutes 8.55 seconds) and the second-fastest two-mile (9:02.05). Last spring, he won the 3,000 at the Penn Relays and the 3,200 at the 4A meet.
D.C. public school teams hope this will be the last season they will have "home" meets in suburban Maryland and Virginia. Dunbar, Wilson, Coolidge, Theodore Roosevelt and Ballou high schools are scheduled to receive new track and field facilities as part of a multimillion-dollar project. D.C. schools' six-lane tracks are in poor condition and unable to host sanctioned invitationals, Dunbar Coach Marvin Parker said. . . .
Walter Johnson junior Chris Moen hopes to follow a white-hot indoor season with a defense of his Maryland 4A title in the 1,600. Other top 1,600 competitors: Meade's Malik Zafar, C.H. Flowers's Jerod Franklin and Bethesda-Chevy Chase's Elias Tousley. . . . Glen Burnie junior Justin Murdock made an impressive national debut this past winter, when he posted the two fastest 55 times in the country and won region and state titles. Murdock is the defending 4A outdoor 100 champion, but Eleanor Roosevelt's Devon Smith and Bowie's Dennis Thomas should challenge.
