"The need is just ever-increasing," Manning said. The society is advertising the expo to its membership of several hundred households.

The keynote speaker is Vincent Carbone, a behavior analyst and autism researcher for 30 years.

Carbone speaks to thousands of people a year in the United States and abroad on using behavior analysis to treat autism, but when he started out, public interest in the issue barely registered.

"The rising numbers of people with autism have put our work into the forefront," said Carbone, who directs a clinic for children with autism in Rockland County, N.Y.

Another speaker, Pamela J. Compart, is a developmental pediatrician in Columbia who looks at whether nutrient deficiencies or digestive problems exacerbate symptoms of autism, an approach that has found support among some researchers. She combines biomedical methods with traditional Western medicine and alternative therapies to treat children with autism.

Compart said continuing research and personally observed results on the effect of diet change and addition of vitamins and minerals has been persuasive.

"I didn't believe in any of this 10 years ago," she said. "I came from a very traditional place."
