Five people were injured yesterday morning, one critically, when their airport shuttle van slammed into the back of a dump truck on the Dulles Airport Access Road, authorities said.
The driver, Foday Kargbo, 32, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital and remained in critical condition yesterday afternoon, Virginia State Police Sgt. Terry W. Licklider said. The passengers suffered less-serious injuries, and the dump truck's driver and passenger were unharmed, he said.
The SuperShuttle van was carrying passengers from the airport about 7:20 a.m. when it rear-ended the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority truck, which was heading to a construction site, Licklider said.
Troopers are investigating why Kargbo drove into the truck, whose driver told them that he was traveling at the 55-mph limit at the time of the crash. No drugs or alcohol are thought to have been involved, Licklider said.
The truck driver "was going to go another 100 yards and pull into the left shoulder when, for whatever reason, the shuttle van went directly into the back of the dump truck," Licklider said.
The crash shut down the eastbound lanes of the access road for more than an hour and briefly forced the closure of the other lanes.
The adjacent Dulles Toll Road was also closed so a helicopter could take the van driver to the hospital.
