Wake-Up Call for 'Great American Dream'

The "Great American Dream Vote" is no more.

No, this is not an early presidential-election story -- that death-of-great-American-dream-vote story will be published in this paper in about nine months. This one's about the end of the road for ABC's latest wish-fulfillment reality series.

Donny Osmond hosted this "Queen for a Day" update in which average Joes pitched their dreams to a studio audience and viewers -- who would then decide which dreamer's wish would be fulfilled. The studio audience whittled the episode's six contestants to two, and viewers voted to give one his or her wish. That person would be revealed on the next episode.

Meanwhile, America's dream was that this show be scrubbed from the network's lineup, and the dream came true after just two broadcasts. On Tuesday, only 6 million of the 18 million people who watched "Dancing With the Stars: The Results Show" stuck around for the unveiling of "GADV." The next night at 8, the audience plunged to 4.5 million viewers, finishing behind even CW's wish-fulfillment competition series "America's Next Top Model."

In case you've missed it, "ANTM" this edition features a gaggle of pretty, catty wannabe mannequins who have posed for faux fashion shoots as, among other things, murder victims and ice cream sundaes and, um, guys.

"ANTM" on Wednesday attracted 5.3 million viewers, grinding "Great American Dream Vote" -- which featured two mothers frantic to get slacker kids out of the house, a farmer hoping to compete in the World Ironman championships and a 40-something guy who wants to try out with an NFL team -- under its high Prada heel.

Hmmm.

Farmer wannabe ironman on the one hand.

Hot young girl posing as strangulation victim in pretty dress on the other.

You be the judge.

Oh wait -- you already were.

ABC says the would-be NFL-er won Wednesday's competition -- nice work, viewers! -- and he will get to work out with the 49ers, they promise.

It just won't happen on ABC.

Instead, "George Lopez" will happen in the Wednesday 8 p.m. time slot on ABC next week.
