The Washington Redskins announced yesterday that they re-signed punter Derrick Frost. He accepted the team's one-year tender and will remain the punter after what was at times a turbulent 2006 season.

That Frost will be brought back would have at first glance appeared something of a long shot. He was the Redskins' punter during the 2005 playoff run, but during training camp 2006 Washington brought in another punter, David Lonie, to compete with Frost.

Frost won the competition, punting well for the remainder of the preseason, but at times struggled with his consistency and composure, once costing the Redskins valuable field position by taking off his helmet to argue with a referee.

At another point during the year, the Redskins brought in 44-year-old Sean Landeta for a tryout as a message to Frost.

Meantime, the Redskins expected to receive a counteroffer to their proposed trade for Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs, but league sources said the Bears did not contact the Redskins yesterday.

Also, the Redskins will open their preseason schedule with an 8 p.m. game Aug. 11 at Tennessee. They'll wrap up the preseason with an Aug. 30 game at Jacksonville, with the time yet to be determined.

The Redskins will have two home games, with specific dates and times still to be finalized, against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.

The regular season schedule is expected to be announced this week. In addition to their NFC East opponents, the Redskins will play home games against Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, Miami and Arizona and road games against Green Bay, Minnesota, New England, the New York Jets and Tampa Bay.

Last week, the NFL announced that the New Orleans Saints will play the Colts in Indianapolis in the regular season opener at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 6.
