Hospitality High to Join D.C. Public Schools
Hospitality High, a charter school in downtown Washington that trains students for hotel and restaurant careers, will relinquish its charter June 30 and join the D.C. public school system, the D.C. Public Charter School Board announced yesterday.
The decision Friday by Hospitality clears the way for the school to move into Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School in Northwest Washington and operate within the traditional school system beginning in August. Hospitality had been leasing space since it opened in 1999 and most recently had been paying $24,000 monthly rent for three floors of an office building. The school's lease is set to expire July 31.
Charter board Chairman Thomas A. Nida said in a statement that the school's decision to give up its autonomy as a charter school to get space in a school building was understandable but "unfortunate." The charter board will assist with the transition.
