ST. MARY'S COUNTY
1 Killed, 3 Injured in Car Wreck
A high school student was killed and three people were seriously injured in a head-on collision Wednesday afternoon in St. Mary's County.
According to the county sheriff's office, a 1998 Dodge Neon driven by Sean T. Gibson, 17, was traveling west about 4 p.m. on Sunnyside Road near Colton's Point Road in Clements. It crossed the center lines and struck a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Amber R. Russell, 20, of Clements.
Ethan W. Chewning, 16, of Chopticon, the front seat passenger in the Neon, died at the scene. Nathaniel T. Fitch, 16, of Clements, the rear seat passenger in the Neon, received life-threatening injuries and was flown to Prince George's Hospital Center. Russell and Gibson received incapacitating injuries and were treated at Suburban Hospital.
All the passengers in the Neon were students at Chopticon High School in Morganza.
Authorities said speed and driver error by Gibson appeared to be contributing factors in the accident. No charges have been filed, pending the outcome of the investigation.
