Arsenal, which is trying to finish in the top four in order to play in next season's Champions League, closed in on third-place Liverpool, which was held to a 0-0 tie at Manchester City.

Manchester United and Chelsea, the league's top teams, each play in different FA Cup semifinal matches this weekend.

Liverpool showed signs of fatigue in its match, which came three days after it advanced to the semifinals of the Champions League.

U.S. midfielder DaMarcus Beasley came closest for City, hitting the Liverpool crossbar in the 75th.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) _ U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo scored in Hannover's 2-1 loss to Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.

Cherundolo sent a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net in the 61st minute to briefly tie the score for Hannover.

Roberto Hilbert had given Stuttgart the lead in the third minute, and Hanno Balitsch chested in another in the 74th.

The win put Stuttgart into second place in the league with 55 points, four less than Schalke. Werder Bremen, with 54 points, can reclaim second if it beats Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

Schalke stayed on course for its first title in 49 years by winning 3-0 at Mainz. Kevin Kuranyi scored one goal and set up the other two for Gerald Asamoah and Lincoln, who returned after a five-game suspension.
