Friday

The John Hicks Legacy Band celebrates the late jazz pianist at Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday (202-234-0072). The band features flutist Elise Wood, Hicks's partner of two decades; saxophonist Bill Saxton; and pianist Lafayette Gilchrist. . . . Working visa problems now cleared up, Mexico's acoustic metal guitar duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela finally arrives at National Geographic's Grosvenor Auditorium for a concert rescheduled from March.

Saturday

This might cause a banned word or two to be exclaimed: C omedian George Carlin is about to celebrate his 70th birthday as well as more than 50 years in show business. Darn! He's at the Warner Theatre for three performances Saturday and Sunday (202-397-7328). For more on Carlin, see Page 23. . . . Madcap mash-ups are on tap when Balkan Beat Box is at work, as in "Nu Med," its notion of a borderless New Mediterranean sound in which "Balkan meets Israeli meets Arabic meets Syrian." Get your groove on at the Rosslyn Spectrum (703-573-7328 ). . . . Lisa Moscatiello & the Space Dots and Ruthie & the Wranglers perform a career-spanning tribute to country legend Loretta Lynn at Germantown's BlackRock Center for the Arts (301-528-2260). . . . British electro-pop quintet Hot Chip's"The Warning" was one of last year's most praised albums, with a nomination for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize and a single, "Over and Over," that was rated the year's best by NME magazine; the group does an early show at the 9:30 club (202-393-0930). . . . Count Walter Salas-Humara as one of indie roots rock's sadly overlooked geniuses, and then catch his group, the Silos, at Iota with the always rough-and-tumbling Tarbox Ramblers (703-522-8340).

Sunday

Now this sounds promising: "new mountain pop," melding the Dixie Chicks, the B52's and the Pretenders. Asheville, N.C., quartet Menage will try to live up to the premise at Iota, opening for Webb Wilder & the Beatnecks. . . . If you like Michel Gondry films, you may know the Willowz: Gondry featured tracks by singer/guitarist Richie James Follin and bassist Jessica Reynoza on the quirky soundtracks for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and in his recent "The Science of Sleep." They're at the Red and the Black (202-399-3201).

Tuesday

The Paul Green School of Rock All-Stars'"guest professor" series features Jon Anderson of Yes; the kids better be all right as they essay such classics as "Owner of a Lonely Heart" at the State Theatre (703-237-0300).

Thursday

Persian electronic-acoustic trio Niyaz, featuring Vas vocalist and composer Azam Ali, mixes ancient Persian and Indian exoticism with contemporary beats at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland in College Park (301-405-2787).
