For the budget year that begins July 1, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors decided to:

· Keep the real estate tax rate at 89 cents for each $100 of assessed value.

· Boost spending on schools, public safety and transportation. Specifically, it would target more money for deer management, environmental and domestic violence programs and revitalizing declining commercial centers throughout the county.

· Increase school spending by 4 percent, although the board suggested delaying the initiative to implement full-day kindergarten in all elementary schools. The school system had asked for $17 million more than the board approved.

· Allocate $500,000 as a one-time contribution to the Center for Multicultural Human Services in Falls Church, which provides mental health and social services.

· Close a gap between revenue and expenses by using $27 million in one-time carryover and other funds.
