EDUCATION

Ex-Board Member Heads Advocacy Group

Jeff Smith, who resigned from the D.C. Board of Education this month to protest Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's takeover of the school system, has been appointed executive director of DC VOICE, a school advocacy organization.

DC VOICE is known for its annual report on whether the school system had enough teachers, textbooks and other necessities on the first day of school. Smith, who represented District 1 on the school board, began the job at DC VOICE yesterday.

"I think in the changing times of school governance . . . it's important to have an organization like DC VOICE effectively advocating and making sure everyone is held accountable during this time of transition," Smith said.
