Have fun. Help people. It should be our mantra.
And we're not the only ones feeling that way lately. Just look at the efforts to assist Callum Robbins, the ill 1-year-old son of local musicians J. Robbins and Janet Morgan. Tonight and tomorrow, the late great Dismemberment Plan reunites to play two shows at the Black Cat to raise money for treatments for Callum, who has been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a motor-neuron disease that can be fatal. How can you get tickets? Well, they sold out in minutes. But you can still check out the boy's story (and his cute smiling face) and make donations at http:/
You can also spread the love by attending other benefit events in town. Among them:
Tonight, choreographer Daniel Burkholder and the PlayGround perform "My Ocean Is Never Blue," a meditation on water and its political and historical meanings. All proceeds from the performance will go to a very worthy cause: Water for People, which supports the development of sustainable drinking-water resources and sanitation in developing countries. Only tonight's performance of the production, which features original music by Jonathan Morris performed live by two musicians, is a benefit, but the show continues through Sunday. $20-$25; $15-$20 for artists, members, seniors and students; ages 17 and younger, $7 (on Saturday and Sunday only). Today and tomorrow at 8 p.m., Sunday at 7. Dance Place, 3225 Eighth St. NE. 202-269-1600.
The D.C. Jewish Community Center throws (no pun, we swear!) a charity dodgeball tournament Sunday to benefit DCJCC's Hunger Action group, which cooks and distributes meals to area shelters. Teams must include at least two men and two women (just keeping things fair, folks) and consist of six to eight people. So gather five friends fast because registration ends tomorrow at 10 p.m. $20 per person. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. 1529 16th St. NW. 202-518-9400, Ext. 3255 or http:/
And over at the Birchmere on Sunday, the Carpenter's Shelter Cook-Off enlists more than 20 area restaurants (Jaleo and 100 King among them) to create a feast for you, with proceeds benefiting the shelter's homeless outreach. $40; ages 6-17, $10; 5 and younger, free. Noon-3 p.m. 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. 703-548-7500.
