Phillies' Garcia Hurt by Run-In With Cart

Phillies RHP Freddy Garcia was injured last night when he ran into an equipment cart that had stopped along the warning track in San Francisco's ballpark.
Garcia bruised his left leg in the collision, raising a question as to whether he will be able to make his scheduled start tonight in the opener of a three-game series at Arizona. Garcia, who was running to try to catch a fly ball, toppled onto the cart used by the grounds crew and was clearly in pain. He was quickly carted off the field on the vehicle.
"I'm not upset. I'm just kind of curious why it was out there during our batting practice," Philadelphia GM Pat Gillick said in the clubhouse, before his club concluded a four-game series against the Giants. "He has a contusion on his leg. They have him iced down. There's no fracture of any kind. We'll all have to wait."
"This is the kind of thing that could get sore and stiffen up overnight, so we have to keep tabs on that," Gillick said.
ยท FIRST GAME: The Dodgers called up 3B Andy LaRoche from Class AAA Las Vegas and placed Marlon Anderson on the 15-day disabled list.
LaRoche went 1 for 4 in his first major league game, a 6-4 loss to the Braves.
"I just wish it could have ended better," LaRoche said. "You just have to try to stay relaxed and realize it's just a ballgame like you've been playing all your life."
LaRoche will continue to start, Manager Grady Little said. "We're going to give him a good opportunity. . . . It's always exciting to see a kid in his first game in the big leagues."
