Here are measures some area school systems are taking to monitor entry to buildings:

Alexandria Video cameras and intercoms at elementary school entrances.

Arlington County Video cameras and intercoms at more than half of elementary school entrances.

The District Video cameras and intercoms at elementary school entrances. Most middle and high schools have metal detectors and X-ray machines to check bags.

Fairfax County Plans to install video cameras and intercoms at elementary and middle school entrances before 2009.

Loudoun County Plans to install video cameras and intercoms at all schools starting this summer.

Montgomery County Testing video cameras and intercoms at two elementary schools.
