One American soldier was killed and four others were wounded by gunfire in Iraq yesterday, the U.S. military announced today.

The soldiers, from Task Force Lightning, were attacked in volatile Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, a military statement said.

No other details were given about the attack.

The name of the deceased soldier will be released after relatives are notified, the statement said.

Almost 3,400 U.S. service members have died since the start of the war in March 2003.
