The Fairfax County police ended the lockdown of a Centreville area elementary school about noon today following an investigation of reports of a shooting in the nearby area.
At 9:30 a.m., police received reports of shots fired in the 5400 block of Ruby Drive, said police spokesman Bud Walker. He said Willow Springs Elementary School was locked down as a precaution even though "the school was not involved in the incident."

Police searched a wooded area near the school, checking for any sign of a shooting but did not find anything.
Fairfax County schools spokesman Paul Regnier said, at the recommendation of police, the exterior doors of the school were locked during the investigation as a precaution and no one was allowed in or out.
Afternoon kindergarten classes were canceled and students in morning kindergarten were to be kept at the school until the lockdown was lifted. Regnier said classes and state standardized tests that are underway at Willow Springs are continuing as usual.
