Hugo Medrano, artistic director of GALA Hispanic Theatre, will take to the stage twice next season, which will mark the company's 32nd year. The mainstage shows are presented in Spanish with English surtitles and performed in GALA's venue at the Tivoli, 14th Street and Park Road NW.
· Medrano will star in "Cita a Ciegas/Blind Date" (Sept. 20-Oct. 14) by Argentine writer Mario Diament. Jose Carrasquillo will direct Medrano in the portrait of a blind writer who sits on a park bench and collects stories from people's lives. The play is inspired by the works of Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges.
· Abel Lopez will stage the comedy "Tu Ternura Molotov/Your Molotov Kisses" (Jan. 31-Feb. 24, 2008) by Venezuelan writer Gustavo Ott, about a professional urban couple and their plans to have a baby.
· Federico Garcia Lorca's tragic Andalusian fable of love, jealousy, betrayal and revenge, "Bodas de Sangre/Blood Wedding" (April 3-27, 2008), will be staged by Medrano.
· The GALA season will end with "Solamente Lara: A Love Song for Lara" (June 5-29, 2008), conceived by Abel Lopez. Medrano will star with pianist Mari Paz in an original musical based on the life and music of Mexican composer-lyricist Agustin Lara (1897-1970), whose songs ("Veracruz," "Perdida") have inspired singers from Nat King Cole to Placido Domingo. A guest director will be announced.
