About 200 people were evacuated from two commercial buildings in Bethesda this morning after an underground transformer caught fire, Montgomery County officials said.

The transformer blew up at approximately 10 a.m. in the 4700 block of Elm Street, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer said.

The transformer is underneath street parking and some witnesses initially told 911 dispatchers that a vehicle appeared to be on fire. The vehicle parked over the manhole cover has been removed and did not catch on fire.

No one is believed to have been injured and investigators found no immediate indication of foul play, Piringer said.

The evacuated buildings are located at 7272 Wisconsin Ave. and 7316 Wisconsin Av., just south of the Regal movie theaters.

Numerous emergency workers and utility crews responded to the scene, which has slowed down traffic in the area, Piringer said.
