Other alleged terrorist plots that have been foiled since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon:

July 7, 2006 -- U.S. authorities announce the arrest of Assem Hammoud, a Lebanese man who they allege was plotting to attack New York City transit tunnels under the Hudson River.

June 23, 2006 -- Seven men are charged with allegedly plotting to blow up Chicago's Sears Tower and other buildings. The group adhered to a vague and militant Islamic ideology and was led by Narseal Batiste, a Haitian American, according to federal officials and court documents.

Feb. 9, 2006 -- President Bush reveals that four Southeast Asians planned to use shoe bombs to take over a plane and steer it into Los Angeles's Library Tower, the tallest building on the West Coast, in mid-2002. The four were captured by Asian authorities before they could execute the plan, Bush said.

Aug. 28, 2004 -- A Pakistani man is charged with conspiring to plant bombs in a busy Manhattan subway station just before the Republican National Convention. Shahawar Matin Siraj was convicted and sentenced to 30 years.

Aug. 17, 2004 -- Eight alleged al-Qaeda operatives are charged in London with conspiring to bomb the World Bank in Washington and the New York Stock Exchange. Their plans prompted the U.S. government to raise its terrorism alert to orange around both institutions.

June 19, 2003 -- An Ohio truck driver pleaded guilty to plotting to bring down New York's Brooklyn Bridge. Iyman Faris was sentenced to 20 years.

Dec. 22, 2001 -- Richard Reid, a self-described follower of Osama bin Laden, is subdued by flight attendants and passengers on an American Airlines flight after he tried to detonate explosives hidden in his shoes. Reid pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.
