The Washington Post assembled, through public records requests, a detailed portrait of the District's public schools by gathering tens of thousands of records, many of them not previously available for analysis. With the exception of test score comparisons, the data do not cover charter schools.

The information includes: police records on crime incidents; test scores in math and reading by gender, poverty status and race or Hispanic origin; repair requests; D.C. Fire Marshal inspections; Department of Health cafeteria inspections; teacher license status; employee lists; and the number of classes taught by what the District defines as "highly qualified" teachers.
