Wilson Gets Caucus Nod
Democratic party insider Justin Wilson won the party's nod for the Alexandria city council seat left open when former vice mayor Andrew H. Macdonald resigned last month.
Wilson, 28, chairman of the board of directors of the Alexandria Transit Co., also known as the DASH bus, was the top vote-getter among five candidates in the Democratic caucus Saturday.
He defeated former prosecutor James K. Lay; Boyd Walker, Macdonald's former campaign manager; lawyer Mark Feldheim; and civic activist Lenny Harris.
Wilson got 655 votes to 537 for Lay, his nearest competitor. A total of 2011 votes was cast.
Wilson had won the endorsement of U.S. Rep. James P. Moran Jr., Mayor William D. Euille and the five city council members, all of whom are Democrats.
"I'm thrilled," Wilson said, adding that he plans to focus his attention on transportation issues and improving fiscal responsibility.
The caucus attracted a higher-than-expected turnout for an unplanned summer election.
Wilson will face Republican William C. "Bill" Cleveland, a former vice mayor, in the special election July 17.
