For those who can't wait half the weekend for the beautiful produce at Sunday's Dupont Circle Freshfarm market, there's a Saturday alternative nearby. The 14 & U Farmers' Market (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) has opened at 14th and U streets NW, on the sidewalk in front of the Reeves Center. The organizers are Markets & More, which operates the Mount Pleasant market (Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Mount Pleasant Street between Park Road and Lamont Street NW) and next Sunday will open the Bloomingdale market (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at First and R streets NW.
The 14 & U market has nine vendors with room to grow to 17, which market manager Katharine Ferguson hopes will make it an urban destination for local foods from local farms. Highlights include gorgeous salad greens from Tree and Leaf in Waterford, many cuts of free-range pork from Truck Patch Farm in New Windsor, Md., and spectacular field-grown flowers from Faucher Meadows in Great Falls. The rustic breads and pastries come to market from Bread Line downtown.
