ZONING COMMISSION

Controversial Condos Gain Preliminary Approval

The D.C. Zoning Commission has granted preliminary approval to a proposed condominium project that has prompted criticism from community leaders in Friendship Heights. The Akridge Co. is seeking to build seven stories on Wisconsin Avenue, just south of the Maryland border.

The local Advisory Neighborhood Commission has opposed the project, and some residents fear that it will set a precedent for large-scale development in the neighborhood. The project also has supporters, including D.C. Council member Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3), who hope it will attract higher-quality retail to the neighborhood.

The Zoning Commission, which voted 5 to 0 this week for the project, could issue a final ruling in the next two months.

WOODSON SR. HIGH

Smoke Leads to Evacuation of Students, Teachers

Students, teachers and staff at Howard D. Woodson Sr. High School evacuated the school yesterday when a fire alarm went off shortly after 9:30 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they noticed "moderate" smoke in the first floor, said Alan Etter, a spokesman for the fire department. But when they entered the basement, they found "significant" smoke.

The fire originated in the boys locker rooms, said John C. White, spokesman for the District school system. No injuries were reported. The cause is being investigated, and two students were being questioned by police, White said.

Students and staff were allowed back into the building shortly before noon, after the building was ventilated and secured. Yesterday was the last day of school. There were at least two other fires at the school this year, both without injuries, White said.
