· COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Indiana assistant Bill Lynch will replace Terry Hoeppner, who is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments after two brain surgeries in 18 months.

· OBITUARY: Larry Whiteside, a baseball writer in Boston, Kansas City and Milwaukee for almost a half-century who was a pioneer for blacks in journalism and a mentor for reporters, has died after a long illness. He was 69.

· RUNNING: Marion Jones, absent from the track scene since her February marriage, apparently will not compete in the 2007 season. "I'm almost sure she isn't," Coach Steve Riddick said in a brief telephone interview with the Associated Press. He said if she was going to run, he would have known by now. He did say the two had spoken, but wouldn't elaborate. Jones has not declared her entry into that or any other event at next week's U.S. championships in Indianapolis.

· COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Former LSU women's basketball coach Pokey Chatman has reached a contract settlement in the wake of her abrupt resignation. LSU will give Chatman $85,000 in postseason bonus money, on top of the $75,000 both sides agreed she is due under the disputed contract, for a total of $160,000.

· COLLEGES: Beginning July 1, the new District radio affiliate for the University of Maryland radio network will be WJFK (106.7 FM). The station's first Terrapins athletic event will be the Sept. 1 football season opener against Villanova.
